Barnsley Main Colliery closed in 1991 but fortunately a headgear, heapstead and Winding Engine house were conserved on the lower part of the site at NGR SE365063. Often missed when visiting the site are the nearby mine office buildings of later NCB style and also some complete buildings associated with another shaft on the mine. These could be workshops but given the remains of the overhead tunnel to the heapstead I wonder if it’s the lamp room etc. All the buildings (except the offices) are of brick construction. The upper site is private and in industrial use so please ask permission before visiting, the lower headgear site is public. Just as an aside when I was leaving the upper site I found 3 half winding wheels rusting and forgotten in the hedge.
