A superb horizontal pumping engine house and headstocks mark the site of the former Calcutta Colliery. This contained a massive pumping engine which eventually drained the whole of the local coalfield. After closure the site was conserved and is now in the hands of an engineering design company who have continued to look after the site. Whilst private, a good photograph can be had from the approach lane and the ridge nearby, and based on my experience the owners seem happy to accommodate on site photographs if it’s convenient. A must see if in the area! It is located at SK420169.
