WESTERN PIT

Western Pit near the Midland Railway Trusts Swanwick Junction is a fine surviving example of a small to medium size coal mine. The winding engine house and brick encased headstocks are in excellent condition and can be easily seen from footpaths around the site. The mines tub run embankment can also be made out leaving the pithead Westwards. These remains are the sole features left of the 3 Butterley company pits that operated in the immediate area, these being, Western, Brands and Brittain Pits. The remains are located at NGR SK 416518.
